Islam contains many rules for daily life and human relationships. The first source of these rules is the Quran and the second is the hadith or reports of the prophet Muhammad's words or actions. Contrary to how popular culture portrays Muslim women's rights and privileges, Islam gives women many rights, including the right to inherit, to work outside the home, and to be educated. Muslims believe that the Quran was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad during the month of Ramadan.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and lasts either 29 or 30 days. During Ramadan, Muslims observe a fast from sunrise to sunset each day, so they wake up early to share food before the sun appears and end it in later in the evening. In the month Gregorian calendar used in much of the world, the timing of Ramadan can vary from year to year.
The dates depend on when the new crescent moon is visible. The fasting, as scholar Mohammad Hassan Khalil explains, is a way for Muslims to be conscious of God.

These memorized prayers are offered five times a day to appease a transcendent force with no personal interest in his creatures. Contrast that with the God of the Bible, who reveals himself, knocks at the door of our hearts, and encourages us to enter into an ever-increasing relationship with him. At birth people are considered sinless with unlimited spiritual potential if they faithfully adhere to the teachings of Allah, as reflected through the words of the prophet Muhammad. Third, while Islam recognizes Jesus as a prophet, it rejects his divinity and claims that Muhammad is actually the superior prophet from God. Now add light to that friendship—listen and engage in conversation around truth.
